ROUTES 242 and 305 – MINOR CHANGES TO SOME CHILD FARES FROM MONDAY 13 NOVEMBER 2023: In order to rectify an error, a small number of short distance child saver fares will be increased to bring them into line with the normal child fare. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Please see below for information about the various different ways in which you can pay for your journey on our Country Route 242, either on the bus or in advance. (Click here for fares information for route PB1 and 305 which are operated on behalf of Hertfordshire County Council).
All fares and pricing may be subject to change at short notice, updates will normally be announced on this website and by notices on Country Routes buses.
M-TICKETS
UPDATE – METROLINE M TICKETS AVAILABILITY
Due to changes to the Intalink App and the very low level of passengers using this facility, it will no longer be possible to purchase Metroline Route 242 Day/Weekly & Monthly tickets or Cheshunt Sixer Weekly Tickets in this way after Friday 30th June 2023.
The tickets will still be available to purchase from the driver using cash or contactless at the normal on bus price.
We appreciate this will see a price increase for passengers who use M-Ticketing but the on bus prices still represent a saving on the cost of purchasing daily single and return fares.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
The following ticket types can all be bought from the driver using cash. It is helpful if you can have the correct fare available when possible. Our drivers do give change, subject to availability, otherwise a change voucher can be issued. Contactless payment can also be made. Oyster cards are not valid on our Country routes.
Adult single fares range from around £1.80 to £4.30 depending upon distance and area. Some short distance fares are also available. Different fare scales apply on routes 305 and PB1 as they are set by Hertfordshire County Council.
Day return fares are available on route 242 for all single fare values at approximately one-and-a-half times the single fare, so saving around 25% compared with two single fares.
Holders of English National Concessionary Travel elderly and disabled persons’ passes issued by Hertfordshire County Council may travel free at any time on production of the valid pass. For information about obtaining a pass, see intalink.org.uk .
Other authorities’ ENTC passes and London Boroughs’ Freedom passes are accepted for free travel at all times except before 0930hrs or after 2300hrs on Mondays to Fridays.
Please note that Transport for London 60+ Oyster cards are not valid on our Country routes.
Monthly tickets are available for a full calendar month from (and including) the day of issue.

Children and students are able to travel at reduced fares (normally about half the adult rate), under the following age conditions, for single, day return and period tickets:
- Under 5 yrs – free (maximum of 2 children, accompanied by a fare paying passenger)
- Age 5 and under 11 – child fare, no proof of age needed
- Age 11 and under 19 – child fare if showing a valid Hertfordshire Saver Card**, obtainable from Hertfordshire County Council subject to conditions, see hertsdirect.org/savercard .
Scholars’ season tickets are available at a discount for periods of half a school term. This ticket gives unlimited travel on route 242*. Buy from driver. Prices vary with the length of term. Conditions as above. Only valid on Metroline buses. Click here for more details and current term prices.
These tickets giving unlimited travel on route 242* are available as follows, offering great savings for regular users:

Cheshunt Sixer tickets are valid on Metroline route 242 for one week’s unlimited travel (including day of issue) between Burton Lane and Waltham Cross Bus Station. Please note that these are only valid on Metroline buses and cannot therefore be used or bought on Sundays or Bank Holidays when another company operates the route.

Metroline participates in the Hertfordshire Intalink partnership which offers a number of tickets also available on other operators’ routes.

Hertfordshire Explorer tickets are valid throughout Hertfordshire, and some points beyond, on all participating operators’ buses including the whole of our routes 242/PB1/305. Please click here for details. (Group: maximum 4 adults/children travelling together).

All period ticket types are valid at all times of day, starting from day of issue Child/Saver fare eligibility is as described above.
Refunds are not available on any period tickets for unused days nor for lost/defaced tickets. Fares and ticket prices correct at January 2023 but may be subject to change without notice.
All tickets mentioned above are available to purchase on-bus from the driver. Tendering the correct fare is always appreciated as it saves time and drivers may have limited change.
Contactless debit/credit cards may be used to purchase any ticket.
