Job summary

The role involves undertaking training in order to become a Coach Driver in Westbus.

You must be prepared to undertake and pass a PCV medical examination, train towards and pass a Category D (PCV) Licence and will be required to hold a Digital Tachograph Card, and a Driver Qualification Card (DQC). In addition you must be prepared to undertake an individual Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

On completion of training and acquiring the relevant qualifications you will be required to drive the company’s coaches, mini coaches, and double deck vehicles on a variety of journeys that are assigned to you.

 All vehicles should be driven in a safe and courteous manner and consideration must be given to the passengers travelling on the vehicle at all times. Journeys should be undertaken using the most appropriate routes and the EU Drivers Hours Regulations must be adhered to at all times.

Main Responsibilities

 

 

  • Driving the vehicle in a safe and professional manner and in accordance with the Highway Code.
  • Undertaking a daily walk round check of your assigned vehicle and completing the appropriate Vehicle Defect Sheets prior to the start of your duty.
  • Reporting any safety related vehicle defects that you have identified to operations staff.
  • Using the vehicle driver tachograph recording equipment and your Drivers Tachograph Card in accordance with EU tachograph rules.
  • Ensuring the safe operation of the vehicle during the period of use and again reporting any vehicle defects that become apparent.
  • Carry out the journey instructions as outlined on your individual work tickets and also drive the vehicle that you have been assigned.
  • Make the necessary preparations for each individual journey using your own maps and satellite navigation devices, taking care to ensure any audible instructions are turned off and any devices do not interfere with driving the vehicle.
  • Communicating politely with the passengers where appropriate, and assist them with any queries regarding the coach facilities such as WC, ventilation, or seat belts.
  • Liaising with group leaders and guides to reconfirm the proposed journey to be undertaken and go through any changes that the client is requesting.
  • Where possible, assisting passengers at the entrance door whilst they are boarding or alighting the vehicle.
  • Wear the company uniform that has been issued to you including a trousers, shirt and tie. Your own smart, polished, black shoes (no trainers) should be worn to portray a professional, corporate image.
  • Communicate with the Operations Department when necessary to alert them of any significant journey changes and also inform them of any situations that may affect the journey such as delays, diversions, or vehicle mechanical failures.
  • Advise the Operations Department immediately of any incidents or accidents that occur whilst undertaking your driving duty.
  • Load and unload passenger’s luggage from the vehicle when required.
  • Make sure the vehicle is left secure and all doors and side lockers are locked and cab / peage windows are shut when leaving the vehicle unattended.
  • Clean the interior and exterior of the vehicle if required at the end of your duty.
  • Re-fuel the vehicle as required and monitor the ad-blue additive level.
  • Complete any necessary paper work and time sheets at the end of your duty.

Essential Criteria

  • Must have held a valid and clean UK category B licence for a period of two years. 
  • Must be physically fit as the job will involve some manual handling.
  • Undertaking and passing all the criteria which enable you to become a coach driver.

 

Hours of work

45 hours + O/T – 6 on 2 off rolling rota
