Job summary

The Master Technician will be a focal point in the garages for technical issues and diagnostic problems. He/she will be the interface between engineers and the Technical Team and will be responsible for diagnostics/repairs and advice on engines, gearboxes, axles, and electrical faults including body systems. The Master Technician will be qualified to a minimum of NVQ3 standard with strong IT and writing / communication skills. He/she must be adaptable and willing to attend garages when and where required to support the Engineering Department. 

Main Responsibilities



  • To be the first point of contact for in-depth engineering fault finding and repairs on specific vehicle types.
  • Carry out diagnostic tests on a wide range of company vehicles and equipment.
  • Notify the Technical Team of faults identified within their area of expertise.
  • Advise the Engineering Manager on technical issues within the garage.
  • Draft reports on the performance and failure of engines, gearboxes, axles, electrics for the Technical Team.
  • Carry out projects/trials on behalf of the Engineering Director/Technical Team manager.
  • To develop and foster good working relationships with engineers and other grades.
  • To develop and maintain effective communication and relationships with chassis and body manufacturers, VOSA, FTA & London Buses.
  • To ensure that all records and paperwork are kept up to date and be a champion for the FMS system.

Essential Criteria

  • Minimum NVQ3 or equivalent with relevant experience.
  • Have a comprehensive understanding of diagnostic equipment and its applications.
  • Have an in-depth technical knowledge of major components fitted to Company fleet.
  • Skilled in the use of IT systems, including Excel, Word, Outlook.
  • Have a full understanding/appreciation of the terms and condition of the Company O Licence.
  • Willing to adapt and update skills and attend training courses.

  • Attend relevant courses selected by management to ensure skills and capability are maintained within the team. 
  • Signing training bonds for relevant courses when required

Hours of work

  • The Master Technician will be required to work a range of shifts in line with the needs of the garages.
  • The working week runs from Sunday to Saturday and comprises of 38 hours.
  • Rest days will be rostered each week. Rosters will include some weekend and Bank Holiday work.
