The Deputy Operations Director is responsible for the overall performance of a network of depots.  This will include adherence to ISO9001 standards, responsibility for LBL audits, full P&L and budgeting responsibility, overall performance and adherence to KPIs for designated depots including Health & Safety, contractual and legal standards.  The Deputy Operations Director will have line management responsibility for Garage Managers or equivalent.

Main Responsibilities



  • Responsible along with designated Garage Manager for preparing and scrutinising financial budget for the garage, once agreed at exec level will be responsible for ensuring that the budget is delivered or exceeded. He/she will ensure that negative variances are highlighted to the Operations Director and a plan is delivered to reduce P&L impact. He/she will monitor costs and revenue against agreed budget and where actual costs or revenue are below agreed budget levels, initiates effective remedial action;
  • Ensures that the company KPIs are achieved and that performance of the garage exceeds the standards laid down by Metroline and TfL. Manages and controls the activities of all garages under his/her control to ensure the delivery of performance against targets and to minimise any adverse effects of under performance whether it be financial or employee related;
  • Attends meetings with contractors as required to ensure adherence to contract standards;
  • Contributes actively to areas of future innovation and project work and is able to suggest methods of reducing risk to the business whilst ensuring that garages maintain their lead position for the future;
  • Through counselling and coaching and use of the Company Performance Management system, ensures that all direct reports are trained and developed so as to realise their potential. Similarly, ensures via direct reports that all relevant staff at the garage receives appropriate development;
  • Is able to identify and develop successors in all areas;
  • Promotes and maintains a harmonious working relationship between union, staff and management;
  • Ensures that the disciplinary policy is correctly applied constantly and where necessary hears disciplinary appeals and grievances in line with Company policy;
  • Deploying resources within the garage to achieve maximum level of performance that is efficient, cost effective and sustainable.

Essential Criteria

  • Demonstrable operational management experience within a transport Company;
  • A sound working knowledge of bus service operation;
  • Hold a relevant Health and Safety qualification;
  • Hold a Certificate of Professional Competence;
  • Extensive experience of dealing and consulting with a Union;
  • Experience of leading a team, including setting KPIs and performance management;
  • Understanding of Employment Law and its application in the workplace;
  • Skilled in the use of IT systems including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

  • An understanding of the company’s obligations to TfL;
  • Ability to encourage, coach and guide Drivers and garage based staff to achieve the standards and levels of performance expected by Metroline.

Hours of work

38 hours per week, Monday to Friday.  Additional hours will be required to meet the needs to the business.
