Learning bus

Offering our staff access to a broad range of education opportunities presented us with a considerable challenge, as our staff work in a variety of locations and often at irregular hours. As a solution, we decided to bring learning to staff in their working environment – in the Learning Bus.

Learning Bus

Working in partnership with the TUC, TGWU, DfES and the College of Northeast London (CoNEL), Metroline developed the Learning Bus as a way of providing learning on the move, bringing direct access to learning opportunities for our staff, often for the first time.

Metroline donated a double-decker bus, which was converted into a mobile learning centre using 11 PCs from CoNEL and a mini library of learning resources. The Learning Bus moves around our garages providing computer skills teaching and library facilities.

Project success

The project has been such a success, that it is now being expanded to include static learning centres in three of our locations. This will also free-up some of the Learning Bus’ time, enabling us to take it into the community, and also build a closer relationships with our local schools, colleges and community centres.

British Athlete, Colin Jackson and PM Gordon Brown welcome Metroline's Learning on the Move bus into 10 Downing Street.
