To reduce the environmental impact of transport, the UK Government, together with local authorities, is encouraging alternative means of travel to the motor car.

Reducing congestion, improving air quality

The bus has emerged as a favoured solution within policies aimed at reducing car use and traffic congestion. More widespread use of the bus can also help to improve air quality, protect sensitive rural environments and support the economic vitality of town centres as well as reduce road accident statistics.

 

 

London in particular has had one of the most radical implementations of environmental focus, through the introduction of the Congestion Charge. Since the introduction of the charge in early 2003, there has been a noticeable difference in road useage and increase in the use of public transport - particularly buses.
