Environmental issues

Thinking green – proactive in preserving

Reducing congestion and improving air quality are the two main environmental issues facing our Capital today. The bus has emerged as a favoured solution in policies aimed at tackling these two problems. More widespread use of the bus can also help to improve air quality, protect sensitive rural environments and support the economic vitality of town centres as well as reduce road accident statistics.

Proactive in preserving – Metroline’s three main aims:

  • Reducing our energy and water consumption
  • Cutting our carbon footprint
  • Increasing our recycling efforts

Metroline takes its responsibility to reduce our environmental impacts very seriously. We recognise the importance of being pro-active in preserving the environment, which is why we were the very first operator to order Alexander Dennis Enviro400 buses.

Metroline recognises that the key to making a sustainable difference lies in the efforts taken by each of its 3,900 employees and their families as they go about their daily lives. To this end, Metroline has launched a company wide initiative to raise awareness of environmental issues amongst our employees and their families, the union and other stakeholders. Measures to recycle all waste are in place at all garages, and various other infrastructural initiatives to save on energy, have been implemented.

As a major user of diesel, pro-active measures have also been taken to reduce fuel consumption; these include recalibrating engines to optimise fuel consumption and fostering fuel-saving driving habits amongst drivers.

Metroline has a direct impact on the environment through consumption of energy and other resources used in our daily business activities and our own fleet through the activities of our drivers and employees.
